Zawiera interesujący i niepublikowany wcześniej materiał ilustracyjny. Maksymilian M. Kolbe).

This publication is an extensive monograph dealing with the fate of over 72 thousand Polish soldiers detained in the POW camps in Lamsdorf in the years of World War II. The monograph, which can boast of a high editorial quality, is the fourth book in the series “The POWs of Lamsdorf”. It was prepared on the basis of domestic and foreign archival materials and museum items, as well as historical dissertations and memoirs. It contains interesting illustrative material which was not published earlier. The volume presents all kinds of issues connected with the stay of Polish POWs – soldiers of the September Campaign of 1939 – in Lamsdorf, beginning with their arrival at the camp, through the conditions they met on the spot, treatment they received and work they were forced to do, transfers to other places, up to their evacuation at the beginning of 1945. The author makes a thorough analysis of the POWs’ attitude towards the reality of life in the camp, including attempts at establishing resistant movement, brings closer the question of managing the POWs’ free time through organizing cultural and educational activities, sports and religious life. He also presents the figures of selected POWs of the Lamsdorf stalags, among whom there were not only privates and non-commissioned officers, but also officers and interned civilians (among others, Father Maksymilian M. Kolbe).
