The author of the volume, professor of sociology at the University of Łódź, reconstructs the wartime vicissitudes of her grandfather, Cpt. Konrad Majcherski, a POW at Dulag B Lamsdorf and oflags: X A Itzehoe, X A Sandbostel, X C Lübeck and II C Woldenberg. She carries this task out, primarily, on the basis of the family archive which has been stored carefully for years and the information drawn from it is confronted with other sources and the literature of the subject. The grandfather’s correspondence with his wife and daughter, as well as photographs that at times prove a most valuable source of knowledge of people and times they happened to live in, become subject to a thorough and penetrating analysis in the book. Consequently, the publication is a pioneering work in Polish sociology, presenting the author’s original method of biographical reconstruction. It offers a peculiar type of guide in elaboration of the family archive. The volume contains rich bibliography and the Annex including biographical notes on the officers mentioned in the letters and notes left by Cpt. Konrad Majcherski.
