Publikacja Anny Matuchniak-Krasuskiej, profesor socjologii w Katedrze Socjologii Sztuki Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, jest bardzo interesującym studium z pogranicza historii i socjologii dotyczącym funkcjonowania polskich oficerów w obozach jenieckich Wehrmachtu podczas II wojny światowej. Wypełnia tym samym dotkliwie odczuwalną lukę w polskim piśmiennictwie naukowym oraz w badaniach nad pamięcią i historią. Autorka analizuje życie w oflagach, skupiając swoją uwagę na różnych metodach adaptacji jeńców do warunków obozowych i sposobach na przetrwanie niewoli. Wśród nich wyróżnia działalność obozowych teatrów, rozkwit twórczości plastycznej oraz sport. Publikacja powstała na podstawie zbiorów muzealnych i archiwalnych, w tym archiwum prywatnego autorki, dotyczących kpt. Konrada Majcherskiego, oficera 25. Pułku Piechoty z Piotrkowa Trybunalskiego, jeńca wojennego numer 613 X A – oflagów X A Itzehoe, X A Sandbostel, X C Lübeck, II C Woldenberg, oraz rozpraw historycznych i wspomnień.

The publication by Anna Matuchniak-Krasuska, a professor of sociology at the Chair of Sociology of Art of the University of Łódź, is a most interesting interdisciplinary study combining history and sociology, which deals with the functioning of Polish officers detained in the Wehrmacht POW camps during World War II. In this way, it fills in the gap that is so severely felt in Polish scientific writings and in research on memory and history. The author analyzes the life going on in oflags, concentrating her attention on different methods of POWs’ adaptation to the conditions encountered in the camps and the ways of surviving their captivity. Among the latter she distinguishes the activity of camp theaters, flourishing of fine art and sport. The monograph was prepared on the basis of museum and archival collections, including the author’s private archive relating to Cpt. Konrad Majcherski, an officer of the 25th Infantry Regiment from Piotrków Trybunalski, a POW no. 613 X A, detained in the oflags: X A Itzehoe, X A Sandbostel, X C Lübeck, II C Woldenberg. Apart from these, the author also made use of historical dissertations and memoirs.
